Air Travel
The small Kimberley Airport, 12 km (7½ miles) southwest of town, is served by South African Express, which connects to Johannesburg and Cape Town daily (except Saturday), and SA Airlink. Phakalane Airways is a relatively new entrant, flying exclusively in the Northern Cape between Kimberley, Upington, and Springbok. CEMAIR flies between Johannesburg and Sishen Kathu—an important mining hub, but these flights aren't really for tourists.
A five-minute drive from the city center, Upington International Airport has the longest runway in the Southern Hemisphere—5 km (3 miles)—and has been the scene of a few global land-speed records. Upington is the gateway to the Kalahari region of South Africa. SA Airlink operates daily service between Upington and both Johannesburg and Cape Town.
