Fodor's Expert Review Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Park (National/State/Provincial) Fodor's Choice

Arguably the Western Cape's most authentic Big Five reserve, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is within relatively easy reach of Cape Town (270 km/168 miles). Animals like elephants, lions, and cheetahs roam free in the reserve's some 135,000 acres, and guides make use of tracking devices to locate them. The scenery is spectacular, too. Rugged gorges alternate with gently rolling plains featuring unique plant life that comes into its own in spring. Crystal-clear night skies promise exceptional stargazing. Three luxury lodges cater to a variety of tastes and life stages: historic Tilney Manor has an old-world farmhouse feel, Gondwana Lodge is geared toward families, and Dwyka Tented Camp, magnificently situated beneath soaring cliffs, is styled as a honeymoon camp.
