Fodor's Expert Review The Grand Café and Rooms
27 Main Rd., Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, 6600, South Africa
Although the entrance is on the town's main street, walking into the Grand is like walking into a different world. The owner describes the decor as "monastery meets bordello," and this seems apt: think dark, smooth walls with rounded arches, large prints on the walls, dim lighting, mismatched boho-chic leopard print–and-brocade sofas, ornate fireplaces, fresh flowers everywhere, and huge silver candelabra. And that's just the reception areas. The rooms are just as fabulous. All have private entrances, and the beds are extra high and extra large, with percale cotton linen and goose-down pillows. Bathtubs placed in front of French windows have amazing views of the ocean and mountains. It doesn't get more eclectic and stylish than this. The restaurant ($$), which is open to nonguests, serves bistro classics and seafood.
