Fodor's Expert Review Lion Sands Private Game Reserve

Lion Sands Private Game Reserve Nature Preserve/Wildlife Refuge Fodor's Choice

Separated from Kruger National Park by the Sabie River, the reserve has been owned and operated by the More family for four generations. Purchased in 1933 as a family retreat, it was opened to the public in 1978 with two lodges and 10,000 acres of undisturbed wildlife that's available only to its guests. Accommodations range from the ultraluxe Ivory Lodge to the more economical River Lodge, and then there's the once-in-a-lifetime Chalkley Treehouse (yes, it really is a bed on a platform in a tree, but it's nothing like the tree house in your backyard), or the 1933 Lodge, the More family's vacation home that's perfect for larger groups and comes complete with personal chef, guide, pool, gym, and wine cellar. The family is so committed to keeping the reserve as close to its original state as possible that they employ a full-time ecologist, the only reserve in the Sabi Sand group to do so.
