Fodor's Expert Review Gold of Africa Museum

Cape Town City Centre Museum/Gallery

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This museum in the historic Martin Melck House chronicles the history and artistry of African gold and houses arguably one of the best collections in the world. The exquisite exhibition upstairs, cleverly displayed in a darkened room, may leave you gasping—artisans from Mali, Senegal, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast certainly knew how to transform this precious metal. Downstairs is a workshop where you can watch jewelers busy at their craft. When you've taken in all the opulence you can, visit the excellent gift shop where you can buy replicas of some traditional Ghanaian jewelry designs or escape to the lovely café in a secluded courtyard. Book ahead for a Pangolin Night Tour (R40; two-person minimum), which includes a guided flashlighted tour of the collection and a glass of wine with gold flakes.
