Why We Like It

An efficiently run international chain-standard hotel, where you know what you're getting, is raised by its stellar location perched on the edge of the Atlantic ocean, almost in the waves, and the clever way it capitalises on this with its perfectly situated terrace, pool and sea-view rooms.

Fodor's Expert Review

This otherwise workaday, business-like chain hotel is lifted by its fantastic location, perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. You may be a five-minute walk from the V&A Waterfront, but it's easy to imagine that you're on a yacht out at sea, which makes a meal or drink on the hotel restaurant's terrace by the water suitably refreshing. Facilities are good, too: a spa, a pool, and a business center.

Room

Rooms are spacious and decorated in slightly bland, neutral tones with a hint of the nautical. All come with free Wi-Fi and the other amenities you'd expect in a hotel of this size.

Tip Ask for a sea-facing room: it's why you're here after all. Or push the boat out (excuse the pun) and book a room with a balcony.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are spacious, with showers and bathtubs, and currently fitted with water efficient filters to help with Cape Town's water crisis (this doesn't affect their use but does remind guests of the importance of saving water).

Lobby

The hotel lobby is often busy but friendly, with a corporate atmosphere. Staff are pleasant but the red leopard print behind the reception desk is a tad offputting.

You Should Know The hotel is popular with business-types and has large meeting and reception facilities, which can add to its occasionally slightly stale corporate atmosphere.

Pool

An infinity pool that spills out into the ocean is a definite highlight.

Spa

Amani Spa boasts the full range of treatments and an oxygenating vitality pool.

Gym

The hotel has a fitness center but can also help guests with maps for scenic hikes or jogs, or give advice on water sports off the coast.

Dining

A drink or meal at Tobago's Restaurant and Terrace, a popular after-work sundowner spot, is another good way to enjoy this singular location, with the waves crashing just below you and whales or dolphins sometimes even spotted over the decent hotel breakfast.

Drinking

Tobago's Bar (and Terrace) is poolside, with similarly spectacular ocean views.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel (as we've mentioned!) is right by the sea, so walks around Mouille Point and Sea Point in one direction, and the V&A Waterfront in the other, are easy. Other destinations are best by a quick car journey - there's a large car park and Ubers pick you up at the gate, usually in under 2 minutes.

Restaurants

Den Anker (15-minute walk) is a chilled place for mussels and beers. Or Willoughby & Co (15-minute walk) may not be scenic (it's inside a shopping center) but it serves top-notch sushi and free wine for those in the know queuing for it.

Bars

Head for The Grand Cafe and Beach (7-minute walk) to get even closer to that sea - you can actually dip your toes in it while drinking a cocktail here. Or swank it up at Bascule Bar (18-minute walk, 9-minute drive), the Cape Grace hotel's gorgeous whiskey bar.
