Why We Like It

This hotel has a different vibe to many in Cape Town - more arty, more backpacker-style, more urban. But what it lacks in some areas - like the gorgeous mountain and sea views the city is known for - it makes up for in others, with a cool, almost unique vibe and party location.

Fodor's Expert Review

Independent travelers with artistic streaks love this place, which was built to represent the creative community of Cape Town, and the location is great if you are looking for nearby nightlife. Well-known local artists—including poet-author Finuala Dowling and architect Andre Vorster—were given a budget and invited to decorate a room to their tastes. The results are fantastic. There's more, too: it's very well priced, the staff are friendly, and the only real drawback is the potential noise and parking dearth of Long Street.

You Should Know This funky hotel does struggle slightly with noise, plus some guests have reported feeling a little unsafe on returning at night - the extent to which these issues will bother you will probably depend on your exposure to late-night city centers, and whether you are traveling alone.

Room

It's impossible to describe all of the rooms in detail in this space, so do check them out online. But our favourites include the Photo Booth room, in which a huge portrait behind the bed is made up of 3,240 black-and-white photos of Capetonians, and the delightfully weird Emergency Room, themed around a hospital, and featuring mirrored walls, lab coats and an X-ray box. But it's not all about show—the amenities are all in place as well. The linen is crisp and clean and the rooms are comfortable.

Tip There are some sweet extra touches here too: the choice of welcome drink is cute, particularly considering the pricepoint.

Bathroom

Bathrooms have flair, too (and function), although they could perhaps do with a bit of an upgrade.

Lobby

The hotel reception area is staffed by friendly, keen personnel, and has coffee and biscuits available for guests too.

Dining

A continental breakfast is now included in the room rate, but there are lots of other options nearby if you are looking for something more.

Drinking

The hotel lobby/lounge area, with a balcony, is cool enough, but this is Cape Town's most hopping nightlife district; it would be a shame to hide in the hotel.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is perfectly located to stumble from bar to bar to bed (although keep an eye on safety). Other destinations are a cab ride away--drivers are unlikely to choose this hotel due to the lack of parking.

Restaurants

Mama Africa (3-minute walk) wins a lot of fans for its hearty, traditional food and live music. Or try Galbi (4-minute walk) for some pretty unusual Korean BBQ with a South African twist.

Bars

You're just steps away from one of Cape Town's coolest new haunts, The Gin Bar (2-minute walk). This hideaway spot celebrates gin (duh) and mixes just five cocktails. Or The Beerhouse (3-minute walk) is a good place to start the night, with a range of craft beers.
