Why We Like It

Fantastic service from the team and cozy spaces to relax in combine to make staying at the Cactusberry Lodge feel truly like a home-from-home, all for very reasonable prices.

Fodor's Expert Review

This great-value guesthouse in an appealing shade of cinnamon terra cotta (a.k.a. cactusberry) is in a quiet neighborhood that is still within walking distance of some attractions and restaurants. The owner, Barbara, provides attentive service to a maximum of 14 guests and will even assemble personalized tours on request. A comfy common lounge upstairs has a TV, honor bar, and DVDs and books for your use, as well as a lovely sundeck with mountain view.

You Should Know This is a Victorian-era former private home, so some of the rooms can feel a bit small.

Room

Rooms may be small but they are stylish and very comfortable for the price, in warm colors with some quirky decor (large black and white portraits of bulls and hippos, for example). All beds are extra long, and rooms upstairs have ceiling fans and a/c, whereas downstairs there are fans only.

Tip Room 5 is the largest and has its own private deck.

Bathroom

The bathrooms have showers over baths, white tiles and attractive mirrors, and are shiningly clean.

Lobby

The 'lobby' at this small guesthouse is really just Barbara and team providing stellar service for guests, day in, day out.

Spa

Massage treatments can be arranged in the rooms.

Dining

Guests can choose continental or full English breakfasts in the cozy breakfast room or the backyard.

Drinking

There's an honor bar, and guests can take drinks to the sundeck or backyard, too, and enjoy them in the shade of the eucalyptus tree.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is within walking distance of Kloof Street (although you may prefer to drive or take a cab at night) and some other good dining and drinking options. Other sights are a quick drive away--around 15 minutes to the waterfront, or ten to the beaches.

Restaurants

Wills Cafe and Deli (7-minute walk) is an unfussy nearby spot for lunch or a coffee. Or try the relaxing Marika's (4-minute walk), a Greek restaurant with great specials made fresh as you order (sit back and enoy the atmosphere while you wait).

Bars

The Vic Bar (12-minute walk, 3-minute drive) is a chilled live music bar with jam sessions on Wednesdays. Or try Bombay Bicycle Club (4-minute drive, 17-minute walk), one of Cape Town's wackier bars.
