Fodor's Expert Review Gathemann

$$ Windhoek African

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This Windhoek favorite (whose ex-pat Swiss owner/chef doubles as the Swiss Honorary Consul) blends traditional Germanic dishes with an exciting lineup of new creations using local ingredients. Aside from the usual selection of Namibian game and fish, try the giant seasonal omajova mushrooms, oysters from Walvis Bay, mahangu (pearl millet) creations, green asparagus from Swakopmund, and wine from Namibia's Kristell Kellerei wine farm in Omaruru. Centrally located in the middle of Windhoek, it's an excellent option for an alfresco meal and a favorite with the Windhoek locals. The place to sit is on the terrace overlooking Independence Avenue and the colonial-era Zoo Park.
