Fodor's Expert Review Skeleton Coast Camp

If you long for a remote wilderness area, consider a four-day safari into this desolate camp, which is built on a small island in the dry Khumib riverbed, among 660,000 acres of the northern part of Skeleton Coast National Park. You sleep under canvas in an elegantly furnished tent on a raised wooden deck with your own smaller deck and awesome desert view, and eat in the open-air dining room under an ancient leadwood tree. Guests can visit an authentic Himba settlement, picnic beside the crashing Atlantic, and drive through oryx-studded plains and shifting sand dunes with their desert birds. The days are long—beginning after breakfast as the morning mists drift from the coastline and ending after sunset—but they are packed so full of excitement and beauty that your head will still be spinning as you fall into your comfortable bed after a splendid dinner. Departures are from Windhoek every Wednesday and Saturday.
