Money Matters

The official currency is the New Metical, but the U.S. dollars, euro, and South African rand are widely accepted. All major towns have ATMs, often operated by Banco Internacional de Moçambique (BIM) or Standard Bank. All accept Visa, but not MasterCard. U.S. dollars can be changed at most banks (but not BIM), but Travelers’ cheques can only be changed at Standard Bank. You’ll really only need local money for markets, street cafés, and vendors, although it’s unlikely dollars or euros will be refused. Local SIM cards are available from cellular outlets and street vendors.
