Air Travel

There are no direct flights from North America to Mozambique. Several airlines fly from Washington D.C. to Maputo with stopovers, including KLM (two stops Amsterdam and Nairobi); Qatar Airlines (one stop Dohar, UAE); South African Airlines (one stop Johannesburg), Ethiopian Airlines (one stop Addis Ababa); American Airlines from New York and Washington D.C. (via Lisbon, Addis Ababa or Johannesburg). British Airways flies from New York (via London, Heathrow) to Johannesburg.

LAM (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique, Ltd.) is the national airline of Mozambique. It flies from Johannesburg, as well as having regular flights between Mozambique's main towns—Vilankulo, Pemba, Inhambane, and Beira. LAM. Airlink flies from Johannesburg direct to Pemba, Beira, Vilankulo, and Maputo.

Airports and Transfers

Most hotels have airport shuttles that are normally included in the accommodation price. Expect to pay a taxi anything from $8 in Vilankulo, to $20 in Maputo. Always decide on the price before you get into the taxi

Inhambane Airport. This old, small, rather chaotic airport does the job of getting you through immigration and customs and into the heart of Mozambique's laid-back coastal resorts. Aeroporto de Inhambane, Codigo Postal 144, Inhambane. 258/29–320–312; www.aeroportos.co.mz.

Maputo International Airport. International arrivals are greeted by a huge wooden sculpture as they exit through customs at this airy modern airport. Nearly ceiling-high red and orange sculptures that look like table lamps brighten the interior. You'll have to fill in a simple health form on arrival. A taxi or transfer from airport to downtown is approximately US$15–20. OR Tambo International Airport. This award-winning airport rates as one of Africa's best. Bright, bold and efficient, it's a great place to shop for souvenirs when you're en route home, from African curios and crafts to fine wines and spirits. Vilankulo Airport. Refurbished and rebuilt by the Chinese governernment as a gift to the Mozambique people, and inaugurated in 2011 by the President of Mozambique, this airy, modern airport services up to 200,000 passengers a year.
