Straddling the cliffs of the north Atlantic coast, Asilah was founded by the Phoenicians around 1500 BC. A prosperous trading town, it was invaded by the Carthaginians, Romans, Normans, and Portuguese, among others; it was officially Spanish territory before being returned to Morocco in 1956.
Today this sleepy fishing village heaves with Moroccan and Spanish tourists during summer. It's also known as one of the country's most artistic communities, hosting an annual arts festival, where artists from all over the world are invited to paint vibrant murals on the picturesque medina's whitewashed walls. There are also several relaxing beaches here, and restaurants that offer some of the area's best fresh fish and seafood dishes.
