When to Go

The mountains are at their most stunningly beautiful in March and April when the irises are blooming and the cherry trees are flowering. Hiking can be done all year-round, but high season is the spring and fall. Attempting the summits in winter means that you need proper equipment and might encounter weather that will impede your plans, but you will be rewarded with empty mountains and peaceful, snow-filled scenery. Summer here is cooler than in the desert and in Marrakesh, but the sun is still strong and you will need lots of water if you decide to trek.

Festivals

The most famous of festivals in this region is the Imilchil Marriage Festival, held each year in September. Legend has it that a "Romeo and Juliet" story happened here ages ago; since then, an annual festival is held for young people to choose their own partner. Though lately the festival has been attracting more and more tourists, it's still a sight to behold. The Setti Fatma Moussem, held in August, still contains the religious elements of a moussem (pilgrimage festival). Foreigners are welcome and will be pulled into the games and entertainment.
