What to Wear

As weather in this region can be unpredictable, it's best to bring layers. It gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, and you always need something warm for nighttime, regardless of the season. A hat and scarf are vital to protect against the sun. A down jacket, or something equally warm, is necessary for most of the year (note that heating is not a given in guesthouses). Solid footwear, such as boots or sneakers, is important, especially if you're planning on doing a trek. Sandals are socially acceptable and a sturdy, sensible pair can be useful for strolls, although not for demanding hikes. Both women and men should dress conservatively. Women will be better received by locals if they wear longish sleeves, avoiding short skirts and shorts. Both genders should be aware that pants are more practical when mule riding.
