Some more sophisticated hotels in the High Atlas are located in or around Ouirgane, Lalla Takerkoust, and Ourika, which are quickly becoming sought-after refuges from the sometimes excessive stimulation of Morocco's cities. There are a couple of stunning kasbahs around Imlil. Most other lodging in the region consists of inexpensive gîtes (backpackers' refuges). Heterosexual couples staying in private homes while trekking will be assumed to be married. It's best not to disabuse your hosts of their assumptions, as it is illegal for a Moroccan and non-Moroccan of opposite sexes to spend the night together if they are not married. If one member of the heterosexual couple is Moroccan, a marriage certificate is likely to be required.
