An unexpected natural wonder in the middle of the country, the 40 freshwater and seven saltwater springs that arise from the River Oum-er-Rbia are best approached from Azrou and Aïn Leuh through the cedar forest. Flowing across nearly the entire Moroccan heartland from the Middle Atlas to the Atlantic Ocean (at Azemmour, south of Casablanca), the great Oum-er-Rbia, Morocco's longest river, has been diverted, dammed, and largely destroyed over the years in favor of irrigation and hydroelectric projects. The sources are now impressive for the great volume of crystal clear water bursting from the adjoining mountain's side, part of the Djebel Hebri Massif and the Michlifen ski area’s snow runoff. The Aguelmane Azigza (Lake Azigza), another 20 km (12 miles) south of the sources on Route 3211, is equally impressive, with stunning red cliffs surrounding undulating blue-green waters.
Kayaking trips are only available during April, and possibly March or early May, depending on weather conditions. Several tour companies offer memorable itineraries by experienced instructors who provide kayak clinics on the scenic Ahansal.
