1. Bab a-Siq
RuinsThe Gate of the Cleft opens onto the Siq, the canyon-lined passageway leading to Petra's main sights. From here you can spot the remains of a Nabatean tunnel, built to divert flood waters from coursing through the narrow cleft and flooding the necropolis. A dam, constructed for the same purpose in the second half of the 1st century AD, was restored by the Jordanians in 1963 and again in 1991.
