Petra

Petra's handicraft specialty is the work of its "sand artists"—artisans who fill bottles with sand in a variety of hues and complex designs. They mine the various colored sands from the area. Artists can customize the purchase by writing a name or other text in the sand; they work and sell their unique wares in shops in Wadi Musa, as well as in the Siq.

  • 1. Petra Sand Castle

    Crafts

The largest souvenir shop of all is the Petra Sand Castle, a four-room maze with everything from inlaid backgammon boards to handwoven rugs to flowing scarfs. Ask to visit the back room to see what the owners call their personal Ali Baba Cave filled with antique Bedouin silver and other crafts. This is one place to get a sand bottle.
