What to Pack

Most people think of Jordan as having a hot climate but it's important to realize that temperatures can fluctuate a great deal even over a single day—especially if you're in the desert, where it gets chilly at night even in summer. Pack cool, easy-care clothes; layers are the way to go. Bring a sweater or jacket for cold nights in the desert, and maybe even a scarf and gloves. Good walking shoes are a must and make sure to take a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Many religious sites forbid shorts and sleeveless shirts for both sexes, so a light scarf is handy to wrap around the shoulders. If you're planning to go to a public beach, pack modest beachwear: women will probably feel more comfortable in a one-piece bathing suit. Bikinis are fine if you're staying on-site at a resort or private boat.
