Fodor's Expert Review Qasr El Bawity Hotel
Bawiti, Giza, Egypt
This stone complex makes a dramatic impression, rising up the hillside like an Islamic citadel. Constructed entirely using local stone and traditional materials, its curvaceous domes and barrel-vaulted ceilings reflect the region's traditional architecture. Rooms are beautifully styled, with natural stone floors and stucco interiors, and tastefully decorated with rugs and other handicrafts. Each of the four spacious suites is unique; the Al-Qasr commands the high ground with a sweeping view from its private patio. An enclosed room houses two plunge pools fed by a hot spring (reddish, iron-rich water), a spacious cool pool, and a garden where you can relax or enjoy a shisha in the shade of a gazebo.
PROS
- traditional styling that's well crafted
- the restaurant serves excellent tagines (traditional stews)
- there's a small children's play area
CONS
- no a/c in the standard rooms, though fans and domed ceilings help to keep the air cool
- expensive compared to other area accommodations
