Fodor's Expert Review El Kharga Oasis Hotel

Al-Kharga, New Valley, Egypt

The dreary main building is a museum of 1970s hotel design, but the cheerful white chalets in the palm garden out back are welcoming and clean. Everybody loves the well-tended garden, but a rock sculpture occupies the very spot you'd expect a pool. Rooms in the main building are worn but functional, with small balconies and temperamental air conditioners. The chalets have crisp white walls and a small patio, but the air-conditioning unit is poorly positioned at the back of the room. Service can be spotty, and the hotel's charmless restaurant puts out an overpriced meal, when in the mood.

PROS

  • pleasant and peaceful courtyard
  • clean chalets
  • quiet in the evening

CONS

  • too bad there's no pool
  • sliding glass doors tend to stick
  • deadbeat restaurant
