Fodor's Expert Review Sentido Palm Royale Soma Bay

Abu Soma Bay, Hurghada–Safaga Hwy., Bur Safaga (Port Safaga), Red Sea, 84711, Egypt

Set on the finest stretch of beach along the entire Red Sea Coast, the InterContinental is the most imposing edifice in this low-key town. The decor in the main building is an over-the-top homage to the days when Egyptology was in its infancy, with gaudy Italianate styling and hand-painted panels depicting 19th-century scenes of Egyptian life. Thankfully, rooms are more sedate. The excellent sports programs here include a dedicated kite-surfing/windsurfing beach, and the Mark Warner Company, which specializes in sports and children's programs, runs the sports center. There's an excellent range of kids' club activities on-site.

PROS

  • excellent water sports offerings
  • lovely stretch of sand separate from the water sports area
  • extensive organized programs make it an excellent choice for families
  • no-smoking rooms

CONS

  • there's little to do outside the hotel complex
  • prevailing winds may suit sports-minded guests but can get strong enough to disrupt sunbathing
  • children's programs must be booked separately through the Mark Warner Company (www.markwarner.co.uk)
