Fodor's Expert Review Marsam Hotel
Luxor, Luxor, Egypt
Originally constructed in the 1920s as a dig house for the University of Chicago's archaeological expeditions, the Marsam Hotel maintains its simple historic charm with mud-brick rooms, locally made furniture, and traditional decor. If you're not staying, it's a great place to stop for a meal after sightseeing around the West Bank.
PROS
- archaeologists still stay here, too
- you can sleep in a historic space, such as Howard Carter's Workroom
- local garden-grown ingredients used for meals
CONS
- no swimming pool
- popular lunch stop for large tour groups
- on the way to the Valley of the Kings, but otherwise remote
