Fodor's Expert Review Windsor Hotel
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
This historic hotel has an atmospheric bar tucked away on its second floor that's a great place to take a break. The Windsor opened in 1901 as the royal baths. During World War I, it was a British officers' club. Some years later it became an adjunct to the legendary Shepheard's. When Shepheard's burned, the Windsor survived, and the bar still retains a vaguely Anglicized air, with heavy colonial furniture that is ideal for reclining with a cold drink. The place draws a regular clientele that includes many aging members of Cairo's intellectual community. The sense of timelessness infects the staff as well, who appear to have worked here since the 1930s and will never rush you out the door.
