Fodor's Expert Review The Windsor Hotel

Built in 1893 as part of the royal baths, the Windsor served as a British officers' club during World War I, was converted to a hotel in the 1930s, and oozes atmosphere. The original fixtures all having been carefully preserved, including an antique elevator that's believed to be among the world's oldest manually-operated wooden elevators. Rooms are comfortably fitted with heavy wooden period-style furniture that gives the place the breezy, slightly creaky feel of a Somerset Maugham story about life in the colonies. Each room is different, so ask to see a couple before you settle on one you like. Ten of the rooms have showers only. It's a quick walk to the Egyptian Museum and the metro.
