Why Are These Secret Tunnels Under London?

This is the most clandestine post office operation of all time!

During World War I, the Post Office in London worked with English museum administers to run art treasures through secret passageways under the city in an attempt to protect the works from a potential attack by Germany. At the height of operation, the Mail Rail system was 6.5 miles long and employed 220 staff who moved more than 400 million parcels daily. The operation was so secure that museums like the Tate, British Museum, and National Portrait Gallery entrusted their artworks to be stored below.
