The 10 Best Pie Shops in America

Queue up a cold glass of milk.

Here’s the thing, cake is fine. Cake is good. Cake is appropriate. But there’s something about pie that just hits the spot. If you’re at a midnight diner, you’re ordering pie. When you’re thinking about homemade goods, you’re thinking about pie. Think about it for a minute. Think about pie. Do you love it? You love it. OK, now look at the list of places below (currently our favorite pie shops in America) to find the best pie of all the pies.

1 OF 10

Allen’s Pie

WHERE: New York City

Good news: this Black-owned bakery based in Harlem ships nationwide. Billed as a temporary respite from your day-to-day, Allen’s may prepare only one type of pie, but don’t be discouraged: their mini, deep-dish fruit pies—choose from apple, blueberry, or cherry—are legendary. True (Ceylon) Cinnamon, one of their special ingredients, has proved to be invaluable. Additionally, their compact size makes them manageable if you’re indulging while casually jog-walking to the subway.

Our pie of choice: The classic apple pie, of course.

INSIDER TIPThere are vegan options that are prepared with non-soy vegan butter.

Sweet Red Peach

WHERE: Inglewood, California

While it may not be specifically recognized as a pie shop, one visit to the bakery that is Sweet Red Peach in Los Angeles County will put your doubts at bay—after all, the “Sweet” part of its name is reportedly a reference to pie/pie-like sweet potato treats! Sweet Red Peach’s banana pudding cheesecake is also close enough in size and definition to warrant the shop a spot on this list…and look, it’s basically one of the best things you can eat.

Our pie of choice: If we’re being honest, probably the Lemon Lush Pie.

3 OF 10

Justice of the Pies

WHERE: Chicago, Illinois

There’s more to this pie establishment than meets the eye (and what meets the eye is pretty mouth-watering. Eye-watering?). Founded by baker Maya-Camille Broussard, Justice of the Pies sets out to honor her late father, a “Pie Master” who was also a criminal defense attorney. Per the shop’s site, Justice of the Pies was created to celebrate “his love for pies and to honor his belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to reform their lives.” Justice of the Pies also specializes in quiches and tarts and even offers cooking classes for those looking to master the art of pie-making!

Our pie of choice: Lavender Blueberry

INSIDER TIPPies eligible for shipping include Caramel Apple Crumble, Bourbon Pecan, and German Chocolate.

4 OF 10

Lush Yummies Pie Co.

WHERE: Numerous Locations (though, Detroit, Michigan-based)

With her family’s iconic “Butta” recipe in hand, owner Jennifer Lyle left her job as a 9th-grade English teacher some years back to pursue her baking passion. Since then, she’s studied at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School and competed in numerous competitions, and her successful baked goods, cooked up in the Lush Yummies Pie Co. kitchens, have made their way onto the shelves of major grocery stores and local markets alike. Lush Yummies Pie Co. is a must-try for fans of classic pie flavors, like peach and apple.

Our pie of choice: The store’s award-winning, signature Lemon.

INSIDER TIPShipping orders and pickup options are available.

5 OF 10

Honeypie

WHERE: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Quality meets quantity at this pie joint, which features a menu (prepared daily from locally-sourced ingredients) that seems to stretch on for days, with treats such as “Milwaukee Mud,” “Ginger Chai Cream,” and “Brandy Old Fashioned Cherry” (thank God). Also notable is their weekend brunch menu (there’s more than just pie at this pie shop!), which features “house-infused” Bloody Marys and buttermilk biscuits.

Our pie of choice: Brandy Old Fashioned Cherry

INSIDER TIPHoneypie hosts an annual pie championship. More here.

6 OF 10

Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop

WHERE: Lahaina, Hawaii

Be it sweet or savory, Leoda’s touts freshly-baked pies daily and an atmosphere reminiscent of grandma’s house. In fact, they refer to their cuisine as “glorified grandma comfort food.” While the menu is limited at the moment (courtesy of a certain pandemic), their pies, which can be ordered in varied sizes, are absolutely worthy of a weeknight/weekend/anytime treat (available for takeout).

Our pie of choice: It’s a tie between the Olowalu Lime and the Chicken Pot Pie (timeless!)

7 OF 10

Emporium Pies

WHERE: Dallas, Texas

The saying “everything is bigger in Texas” obviously extends to pies, as well. And Emporium Pies, home of the “Lord of the Pies,” which is prepared with 10 apples (yes, that’s 10 per pie), understands that. In addition to offering customers the tallest pie on the market (that we know of), there are several other delectable pies worth enjoying with a cup of coffee, including the Smooth Operator (French silk chocolate with a pretzel crust) and the Melted Snowman (cookies and cream custard with a chocolate cookie crust).

Our pie of choice: Lord of the Pies (which is, by the way, also full of cinnamon streusel and a house-made caramel)

8 OF 10

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe

WHERE: Key West, Florida

I can’t think of a better place to get key lime pie than at this Key West hot spot, which has been around for more than 20 years. On the shoppe’s site, you’ll find an option to have pies delivered directly to you as well as a recipe page full of dishes that incorporate lime juice as a key ingredient. One of the shoppe’s offerings is key lime pie on a stick dipped in Belgian chocolate.

Our pie of choice: Key Lime…

9 OF 10

Labadie’s Bakery

WHERE: Lewiston, Maine

Being the home of the original Maine whoopie pie (“same as it was in 1925!”), it seemed pretty unfair to leave Labadie’s off this list. Delicious cream sandwiched between two pieces of moist chocolate…who can resist?! That’s a rhetorical question!

Our pie of choice: Whoopie!

10 OF 10

I Like Pie

WHERE: Claremont, California

Do you like pie? Then this is the place for you, haha (sorry)! One of the best things about I Like Pie—and there’s a lot to like—is their hand-sized pie. These small servings mean that you can mix and match your orders, not unlike a sampler platter. Who doesn’t love a sampler platter?! Notable savory pies include chicken pot pie, shepherd’s pie, and caramelized onion and potato quiche.

Our pie of choice: Peanut Butter Brownie Bomb
