Best for: High-end travelers who can’t quite commit to spending $200,000 to reserve a seat on one of Virgin Galactic’s spaceships

If you don’t want to sacrifice luxury to experience an otherworldly evening, the hotel’s Space Suite is a great compromise. Guests checking into the fifth-floor suite, designed in tasteful shades of black, white, and gray by German artist Michael Najjar, are greeted by a robotic female voice inspired by John Carpenter’s sci-film Dark Star. Both the carpet and ceiling of the living area feature realistic crater-, star- and asteroid-like images made by melding together photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The ‘sleeping module’ (aka bedroom) contains a zero-gravity bed, but the suite is ultimately more chic than space geek.

Best for: Those who are over the moon about good design

The 30 ultra-modern Space Club rooms designed by the boundary pushing designer Zaha Hadid, who passed away in 2016, comprise an entire floor of the hotel. Designed in black or white color schemes, each has color-changing Vortexx lighting. What makes these rooms look and feel truly futuristic is that the walls, floors, and furniture are all one continuous surface, complete with rounded edges and curves. Warning: The all-white rooms may not be ideal for those traveling with little ones.

Best for: Singles and families who prefer subtlety over OTT space-themed rooms

This hotel, conveniently located above the Sants railway station, doesn’t hit you over the head with its space theme, but the understated lobby is inspired by a space station, and the 378 orbital rooms and suites promise to take guests on an imaginary galactic journey while also offering old-school comforts like free Wi-Fi, HDTV and iPhone docking stations. Carrying through on the futuristic theme are the property’s three aptly named restaurants: Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen, as well as an Orbital Bar.

Best for: Die-hard Star Wars fans who don’t shy away from adventure

In a remote village with a population of around 2,000, this 20-room hotel actually served as the location for Luke Skywalker’s sunken desert homestead on the planet Tatooine in 1976’s Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and again in the 2002 prequel Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The hotel, designed as a traditional cave-like underground building with echoing corridors and courtyards, is no touristy recreation—It’s the real deal. It may also be the biggest bargain of the last frontier. But don’t expect any bells or whistles for the price.

Best for: Families with young space enthusiasts

The Outer Space Room in this clean and tidy hotel doesn’t subscribe to the theory that everything must be dark to feel galactic. Case in point: The room has a balcony with sea views. It also boasts a “crater” bed with astronaut spacesuit bedding for adults and a cylindrical rocket that’s big enough for kids to play and sleep in. There’s also a full-wall space mural, and 3D planets hanging from the ceiling.

Best for: Modernists with a sense of adventure—and a sense of humor

Located minutes from the city’s Central Business District, this boutique hotel’s ‘Whimsical’ room includes two dramatic spaces with floor-to-ceiling, multi-faceted metal rockets (red or gray) that are works of art in themselves. The stuffed aliens that greet visitors when they enter are a fun, if not as inspired, touch. Found on the hotel’s top floor, the dimly lit space-themed rooms have metal railings that lead explorers up to loft beds, where they can crash for the night under twinkling stars. If you’re looking for a modern take on outer space, consider this your place.

Best for: Solo travelers who seriously embrace space

Located in a pedestrian area of Shenzhen, this 17-room hotel (which is more like a hostel) has shared bathrooms along with a tech-inspired, futuristic aesthetic. This adult-only Space Odyssey Suite, where smoking is permitted, is as tricked-out as they come. There’s a spaceship bed and a triangular whirlpool bath that glows under the stars from various galaxies. The suite has more of a futuristic retro vibe than some others, but the blue lighting and glow-in-the-dark planets on the walls and ceiling make you feel like you’ve left this planet behind.

Best for: A family-friendly crash pad

This hotel offers a variety of themed suites, including the Space Theme room, complete with a “command station” desk, futuristic bunk beds, and a jet-black, two-person Jacuzzi that’s great for relaxing after a long day of cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the area.
