9 Terrific Tree Tunnels Around the World

Tangled up in green.

Surrounding ourselves with trees can be relaxing and give us a sense of being closer to or more connected with nature. Sometimes in the heart of cities, on the outskirts of town, or in forests, rows of trees on either side of the road or path can form what is often referred to as a tree tunnel.

The high or low canopies of the trees create a nature-made tunnel. There are different places throughout the world where you can walk or drive through these tree tunnels and experience what it’s like to be embraced by nature.

1 OF 9

Point Reyes National Seashore Park

WHERE: Point Reyes, California

This curious tree tunnel is in the Point Reyes National Seashore Park in Northern California. Despite this spot being well-known among photographers continually snapping shots of this natural setting, you won’t find any signs directing you to this cool tunnel. Because of this, you´ll want to be on the lookout between the visitors center and the lighthouse–the turn-off is between these two points.

INSIDER TIPTime your visit around sunset for the best photo ops.

2 OF 9

Highway 520

WHERE: Kauai, Hawaii

Eucalyptus trees line the road for a mile forming a well-known tree tunnel on Highway 520 that leads to Poipu Beach and the town of Koloa. These trees, interestingly enough, aren’t native to Hawaii. They were brought over from Australia by Walter Duncan McBryde who gifted them to the community in the early 1900s.

INSIDER TIPIf you want to stop for pictures, make sure there is a turnout to prevent traffic accidents.

The Tunnel of Love

WHERE: Klevan, Ukraine

Colloquially known as the Tunnel of Love, this arched tree tunnel forms over train tracks. Beginning at the Klevan train station, you can walk towards the next town of Orzhiv. Creating cool optical effects, it’s a spectacular spot for fun. Plus, it’s been in several films and commercials.

INSIDER TIPThese train tracks are part of an industrial line and are still in operation, so be aware of train times so you don’t get caught on the railway.

Dark Hedges Estate

WHERE: Ballymoney, Northern Ireland

Beech trees line the pathway to the Gracehill House of the Dark Hedges Estate. Originally planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family, this cool tree tunnel continues to awe everyone who visits.

INSIDER TIPThis may already be on your bucket list if you´re a fan of “Game of Thrones,” since several scenes were shot here during the second season.

Bodnant Gardens

WHERE: Tal-y-Cafn, Wales

Bodnant Gardens is a historical garden that is near Tal-y-Cafn, a town in Wales. The metal-based frame was initially handcrafted to create a tunnel spanning 180 feet. Laburnums, a type of tree that produces vibrant yellow hanging flowers, were planted to adorn and drape overhead so that you feel embraced by the flowers when you walk through.

INSIDER TIPTime your visit in spring when the flowers are blooming, typically for two to three weeks at the end of May and early June.

6 OF 9

Stane Street

WHERE: West Sussex, England

Finding this tunnel, you´ll want to head on a forest path, also known as Stane Street, an important Roman route that leads from the city of London to Chichester. You can take a short walk or complete a four-mile loop trail that offers beautiful vistas of the countryside as you make your way to the Halnaker windmill.

INSIDER TIPIf you´re wanting a cozy embrace by the trees, venture here in summer or early fall as the leaves begin to change color.

7 OF 9

Broad Walk

WHERE: London, England

Take a stroll through this famous park in central London and don’t miss one of the main paths known as the Broad Walk. Tall trees line this pedestrian avenue as people ride their bikes, rollerskate, run, or leisurely chat with friends.

8 OF 9

Kawachi Fuji Garden

WHERE: Kitakyushu, Japan

Visiting Kawachi Fuji Garden in the city Kitakyushu offers the opportunity to stroll below two different tree tunnels. One tunnel spans approximately 263 feet while the other offers a longer passageway at 722 feet, with glorious wisteria branches and flowers draping over the tunnel, enveloping passerby in glorious shades of purple blooms.

INSIDER TIPThe best time to check out this garden is in spring, usually from April to May when the flowers are blossoming.

9 OF 9

Pretoria

WHERE: South Africa

Jacaranda trees are well-known in Pretoria–so much so that they have earned the nickname “Jacaranda City” for the plethora of trees that grow throughout this area. Because these trees are so abundant, there are several tree tunnels you can visit, so choose a favorite or less traveled (or all of the above).

INSIDER TIPVisit between September and November when these purple hanging flowers are blossoming.
