Rothaus Brewery

WHERE: Germany

Germany has rules for everything, but that’s not always a bad thing! The southwest state of Baden-Württemberg has a 501-year-old beer purity law restricting ingredients to barley, hops, and water only, making this a prime region for sippin’ suds. The Rothaus Brewery dates back to 1791, when it was founded by Benedictine monks in the Black Forest, and puts some serious effort into preserving and protecting its spectacular surroundings. Take the 90-minute guided brewery tour for a behind-the-scenes look at the process and a sample of Tannenzäpfle (a pilsner named for pinecones), or keep it light and take an audioguide on a stroll through the interactive BrewWorld exhibit (you’ll still get a Tannenzäpfle).  Afterward, check into one of two guesthouses boasting Alpine views and free minibars stocked with a variety of Rothaus beers!

Tuk Tuk Microbrewery

WHERE: South Africa

Long-regarded as a first-class wine destination, South Africa’s Franschhoek Valley is ready to embrace beer culture.  In the heart of the Franschhoek Village, Tuk Tuk is the valley’s first craft microbrewery and offers Mexican tapas along with its brew. Eating and drinking outdoors is always great (and available here), but curious imbibers will want to sit indoors just this once. Tables are placed throughout the brewery so you can witness the crafting process at various stages while you partake–think of it as the farm-to-table experience for beer! Because Tuk Tuk is owned by Leeu Collection, you’ll have not one but two upscale sleepover options on site. On one side of the brewery is Leeu House, and on the other is Le Quartier Français, harkening back to the region’s Huguenot settlement in the 17th century.

D&D Brewery

WHERE: Honduras

Central America may conjure more cravings for coffee than beer, but D&D Brewery in the Lake Yojoa region of Honduras has both. D&D typically pours around five of their own brews daily and imports other international specialty beers to keep variety strong. The region is packed with adventure musts like ziplining over a waterfall and exploring caves, and D&D offers guided excursions ranging from day trips through a cloud forest to three-day birding trips. With accommodation options ranging from a plot of land for pitching your tent or a bed in a mixed dorm (hostel-style) to a room in the plantation house with a private garden, there’s a sleepover option for any budget at this microbrewery.

INSIDER TIPD&D accepts U.S. dollars.

Hotel U Medvidku

WHERE: Czech Republic

Welcome to the home of the world’s strongest beer. X Beer 33 is so strong and so quickly absorbed into the bloodstream that the Hotel U Medvidku in Prague recommends you drink it at the end of a meal with (or as!) dessert. After an evening of sampling here, you’re definitely going to want to lie down. Luckily, there are 43 rooms on site and, because of the property’s impressive age (with a history dating back to 1466), you can admire preserved renaissance-painted ceilings while you doze off. Don’t leave without taking advantage of the opportunity to brew your own beer here. It’s a 9-hour process led by a professional brewer who will guide you from start to finish and includes lunch, snacks, and tastings of the property’s own brews throughout the day.

The BREW

WHERE: China

Strolling through Pudong, Shanghai, you might think the Kerry Hotel is just another luxury property better suited for suits than suds, but if you didn’t stop in you’d be missing out on a local favorite that’s developed a regional reputation for quality microbrews. The BREW is the Kerry’s upscale microbrewery, serving six handcrafted beers (and a cider), all curated by its resident brew master. You can pop in for a drink and high-end pub bites (daily buy-one-get-one happy hour from 3 pm to 8 pm brings the budget down a bit), take a more committed approach through tasting classes, or go deep and develop your own private label. Whatever you choose, sleep it off in style at the Kerry before heading out the next day to investigate Shanghai’s growing craft culture.

Granite Belt Brewery

WHERE: Australia

The only brewery retreat in Queensland, Granite Belt Brewery serves up seven core brews and a seasonal variation. Just five minutes from the town of Stanthorpe and nearby to the wineries and attractions of Granite Belt, there’s a ton of down-under fun to be had here, but you don’t have to leave the brewery at all—it’s equipped with a restaurant and plenty of sleepover options. Rent one of 16 cedar cabins, indulge yourself in the spa cabin, or hit the bush with a group of friends and search out the Hidden House for exceptional privacy (don’t worry—it’s only three minutes from the rest of the facilities!).

Ægir BrewPub

WHERE: Norway

Vikings, dragons, and Norse gods are the design inspirations for this brewery built in the style of an old stave church in Flåm. If that’s not enough to bring you in, then come for craft beer that has won gold medals in international competition, and pair your pints with the pub’s Viking menu that uses beer as an ingredient whenever possible. After your feast, get a room at the brewery’s Flåmsbrygga Hotel and take advantage of private balconies with fjord views. Biking, hiking, and kayaking are popular activities in the area, so take advantage of these outdoor options to burn a few calories between Viking feasts at this one of a kind Norwegian property.
