#NotBadNews: How One American Icon Is Spending Quarantine

Today in #NotBadNews, we look at a comedy-queen’s acceptance speech and the newest addition to your office vending machine.

Welcome to #NotBadNews, our new (and hopefully short-lived) daily column where we round up the good, surprising, and weird things that have happened around the world during this coronavirus pandemic.

Barbie Gets Quarantined

Sometimes she’s a doctor, other times she’s a lawyer, occasionally she’s a tennis pro, and today, she’s in lockdown just like the rest of us. A California artist took to Instagram to share her latest project—iconic Barbies in quarantine.

These creations are both relatable and hilarious! And let’s be honest, while we may have started quarantine as New Hobby Edition, we’re now slowly approaching the What Time and Day Editions.

The Virtual Award Show

Even in quarantine, celebrities and their acceptance speeches are being played off—at least that’s the case for Schitt’s Creek actress and general funny-lady Catherine O’Hara. After winning for Best Actress in a Comedy at the Canadian Screen Awards, O’Hara gave a speech that made the new normal feel, well, normal, playing herself off the stage mere seconds in.

If anyone knows how to make us laugh, it’s Catherine O’Hara. If the Oscars go virtual, we expect nothing less!

Denzel’s Stepping In

Seeing a potential issue beginning to arise between the LAPD and a homeless man, actor Denzel Washington decided to step in. To assure that the conversation did not escalate and that the man was not harmed nor wrongly taken in, one of our favorite actors placed himself right in the middle.

After a month of escalated police violence towards men and women of color, this small act made a huge difference. Denzel is leading by example, showing us how to use our self, and for many, privilege, to help in a situation of this sort.

A New Use for Your Spare Change

I’m one to hoard my spare change until it’s enough for a bag of chips from the vending machine, but there is a new option for vending-machine frequenters. Rather than spend our loose dollars on Cheetos, we can put them towards our safety.

New York has introduced face-mask vending machines, making the required wear much more accessible, and cheap! For only three dollars (a much cheaper price than most masks you’ll find online) and a short walk, you’ll now be able to access a mask (or a few, as they’re also being sold in bundles)! For those struggling to obtain a mask in a city where their wear is required, this is seriously good news.

This Is Perhaps the Oddest Cat Toy

We’ve seen a lot of bizarre things in quarantine, but we think this one is heading towards the top of that list. This cat, for some reason, just can’t seem to sleep without his cardboard cut-out of actor Danny Devito.

I mean, there are a lot of questions to be asked here. Why a cut out to begin with? Why Danny Devito? And has this cat not seen Matilda?

The “Old Town Road” Collab We’ve Been Waiting For

First it was Billy Ray, then it was Diplo, then it was Mason Ramsey, Young Thug, and BTS. Now Lil Nas X has finally collaborated with the artist we have all been asking for: Elmo! Our favorite “Old Town Road” singer headed to Sesame Street for a quick duet with our other favorite singer, and the result is really, really sweet.

This is something we didn’t know was needed this week, but 20 views later and I’m not sure where I’d be without it! Combine the sweetness of Lil Nas X with Elmo and you get something totally wholesome (be right back, bookmarking for all future bad days).

Check-in every day for an update on the wonderful and weird things happening in our current coronavirus world.
