Las Vegas Installs Street Lights Powered by Footsteps

Streetlight

Las Vegas may be famous for being a city that embraces excess, but Sin City has recently adopted a clean energy solution for its streetlights. EnGoPlanet, a clean tech start-up, partnered with the city of Las Vegas to install the world’s first “Smart Street Lights” at The Boulder Plaza in the Arts District.

While most people think of solar or wind energy when they think of clean energy, the new Smart Street Lights utilizes kinetic energy. That means whenever a pedestrian steps on one of the energy tiles outfitted around the plaza, the energy generated from their footstep is transferred to a battery that then powers the streetlight. Who knows—maybe one day that bright Las Vegas skyline could be lit up with the power of footsteps.
