The Chinese government has announced its plans to build a mountaineering center and hotel on the north side of Mount Everest. While the Nepalese southern approach to Everest is the most direct and the most popular, it’s also the most dangerous route to the peak. Consequentially, the northern side has recently become more appealing to would-be conquerors of the world’s tallest mountain.
The mountaineering center will feature a helicopter rescue base, a mountaineering school for high altitude workers, and a full-fledged hotel complete with restaurants.
The mountaineering center is set to open in 2019.
