Matthew Haines

Matt Haines is a freelance writer living in New Orleans. He has written for a variety of location publications, as well as national publications such as Fodor's, Voice of America, Zagat, CNN, Great Big Story and more. Before moving to New Orleans in 2009, Matt performed with and taught marching bands in Japan, Thailand, Singapore and across the United States. Matt was born in New York State and studied Trombone Performance at Ithaca College before moving to New York City, where he attended The New School as a graduate student. His writing career began in 2017 when he ate and reviewed more than 80 different king cakes in a single Mardi Gras. That same year, he took six months to hike the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. He saw 11 bears, but was eaten by none of them. Matt is currently writing a book about his hike in between other writing projects focused on travel, space exploration, food, history, and the outdoors.
