Anna Mindess

Anna Mindess has written about food, culture and travel for AFAR, Lonely Planet, KQED, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and many other publications for over a dozen years. Her focus is often on immigrant-owned restaurants. She received the 2018 Association of Food Journalists award for Best Food Essay for her story about 1951 Coffee, a refugee-run cafe in Northern California. Anna also works as an American Sign Language interpreter and holds an MA in Language and Culture. She is the author of Reading Between the Signs: Intercultural Communication for Sign Language Interpreters, which has been used around the world to sensitize interpreters to the cultural factors in their work, and has been translated into French, Chinese and Hungarian. Intertwining her two careers, Anna has visited and written about Deaf-owned restaurants in Paris, Taipei and Beijing. She currently lives in Berkeley, California.
