Andrea Hoag

Andrea Hoag is a writer living in Lawrence, Kansas, with degrees in Italian and art history who's been dragging her children around the world and writing about it since 1999. She is thankful to her parents for teaching her the art of budget travel from an early age. Hoag credits all her fondest memories to them, knowing she would never have enjoyed mountain hikes in Scandinavia with dare-devil Norwegian cousins, learning the secret to survival on a German kindergarten playground (bring gummy worms to share!), or had the confidence to charm museum guards into letting her view off-limit collections if it weren’t for them. Her travel writing, book reviews, and essays appear in the Washington Post, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Kansas City Star, and Atlanta Journal-Constitution, among others. Whether she’s braving 105-degree weather to visit the International Ceramics Museum in Faenza with her artist daughter, or traveling the U.S. with her son’s AAU basketball team, she is always hard at work on new personal essays.
