Over the last week, Milan welcomed designers, models, and fashion connoisseurs alike to their Italian city to view the trends and looks that are expected to dominate our 2020 fall and winter. While the spread of coronavirus to Italy caused some cancelations and empty audiences, coverage of fashion week, the looks and the shows, went uninterrupted.
The collections ranged from ready-to-wear to Marie Antoinette chic. The fashion inspired not only new outfit ideas, but for us at Fodor’s, they served as vacation inspiration. With another fashion week behind us, we are once again helping you plan a trip around the week’s best shows.
Bottega Veneta
Where to Wear: Tokyo, Japan

In order to wear this futuristic collection, we must travel to a city that feels a decade ahead of the rest. Tokyo, with its neon lights, electric billboards, and colorful windows serves as the perfect backdrop for Bottega Veneta’s gothic and Blade-esque collection. While the line consists mostly of full-length black pieces, all with a forward-thinking twist, the occasional neon that pops up throughout the collection will lend itself well to the playfulness and color seen in Tokyo.

Where do we wear something that is both cabin-cozy and chic? Look no further than this world-class ski destination and home of America’s most talked-about film festival. This collection is practical for cold weather while still offering an abundance of modern patterns and designs. The collared sweaters, belted cardigans, and overcoats match the rustic feel of Park City while still being dressed-up enough to view a screening of what will probably be an Oscar contender with the stars themselves.

Etro
Where to Wear: Santa Fe, New Mexico

The brimmed hats, big studded belts, and bandanas have us booking our tickets to the American South-West. Etro’s terra-cotta collection is feminine and cool and the layers allow for you to adjust to the varying Santa Fe weather (don’t forget that the desert gets very cold at night). Take on the Georgia O’Keeffe museum where you can match the floral dresses to some of her most famous paintings.

Where to Wear: Neuilly-sur-Seine, France

While Wassily Kandinsky, who is credited with leading the abstract art movement, was born in Russia, he found himself settling down in Neuilly-sur-Seine, where this line that mimics so much of his work perfectly fits. Some of the pieces are extravagant and avant-garde while some are more simple sweaters with an interesting pattern. Walk the streets of this neighborhood outside of Paris in an interesting but comparatively mild dress during the day, and then opt for one of the more unique pieces to wear to a top-tier restaurant at night; either way, you will be looking très beau.

Bring on the cold, Max Mara’s newest line has us covered. While edginess and cozy aren’t typically two things that we typically associate with one another, this collection makes it work. It is perfect for city dwellers who tend to gravitate more towards grungy than girly, and the sheer warmth makes it ideal for a trip to Helsinki. Tour the city during the day, take in the sights, and at night bundle up in one of their many puffers or lined-leather coats to view the Northern Lights. This runway show made keeping warm look very cool.

The flight attendant look is iconic and timeless, and Prada’s line picks-up on the elegance and functionality of it. Travel to the airport in style with this collection, which has a strong focus on the shoes and bags. The shoes are easy to walk the airport and easy to take off at TSA (though, if you’re buying Prada you probably have Pre-Check) and their small crossbodies fit a phone, passport, and whatever cards and ID you might need. Add a larger bag to the look for your neck pillow and laptop so that, even though you look put-together, you can take a moment to relax during flight.
