The cost for the Greyl bottle may seem high. But the antiparasitic tablet and lab work cost me more. You can use lifestraw or sawyer bottles which are cheaper and are filters, not purifiers. The Greyl I use for rural areas.
I'm not sure I understand -- are you saying that you ended up in need of medical intervention after using only bottled water? Or that you neglected to use bottled water to brush your teeth?

Sorry for the confusion. You will be fine with bottled water or treated water in Peru. There is no way of knowing how the parasite "came on board" so to speak. For this to happen was apparently very rare, and due to the timeline I was told, it can't be pinned on drinking water in Peru. It can't be pinned down at all..maybe a salad in Chille or a sandwich on a summit...or anything else during the past 4 backcountry treks and 2 trips on a boat in the tropics. My new SOP is to purify already treated water when in doubt and to purify tap water to have in the room to skip using the plastic single-use bottles they leave in the bathroom.

@ onthebow: Thanks, that makes much more sense. I did not have any problem with the bottled water in Peru, which is what I used for brushing my teeth, cleaning my contact lens, etc. And as already noted, I find ways to minimize the use of plastic bottles without a water purifying / treating system.

Please keep an eye out on notifications of flight suspensions. Flights between Europe, Asia and Peru will be suspended for the next 30 days. Official notices are published in El Peruano, but the NYTimes is also keeping track of closures.

It’s good that I managed to visit South America before all this madness

The OP has not said when the trip is. Peru is closed to all foreign visitors right now.
