Biking Amsterdam Central to Oudekerk an den Amstel

Dear Forum Members,

I’ve made this wonderful bike trip many times in the past, but I always struggle with the first part. 1) What is the optimal scenic path from Amsterdam Central Station? 2) are there GPS apps that help? 3) Are there other day trips biking that are similar to this one?

thanks much for your help!

I don't know if Menachem or Bilboburgler will see this post but they are both cycling experts, Menachem is Dutch. Hopefully they will have an answer for you.

Note it is Ouderkerk aan de Amstel.

You could look at https://en.routeplanner.fietsersbond.nl/ which also has an app. Not always a great app, but can help you with planning. You can choose various types of route, using "knooppunten" numbers junctions or a different type, scenic or fast or mostly car free or whatever.

There is also a Fietsknoopunt app.
The knopppunten are good and pretty easy to use but may not be the most logical route. For instance for your route the knooppunten route is about 16km, where as the recreational route is only about 13km.
Not sure if the apps are available in English or not. You can of course just write down the list of knooppunten if that is easier.

Garmin do good bike routes if you have a Garmin GPS. Don't rely on Google maps the bike route planning is not great .

Are you staying in Amsterdam? If so you can head north out of the city and explore Waterland easily, or take a train out somewhere and do a ride from there.

Some ideas online: https://www.iwanderandroam.com/cycle...rom-amsterdam/
https://www.hollandcyclingroutes.com...-route-planner
https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/see-an...cycling-routes
https://www.komoot.com/guide/892267/...ound-amsterdam

That last one can load the routes in your phone.

If Menachem sees this he will have better ideas than me, he is a dyed in the wool cyclist who knows that area well.

Route to Ouderkerk and nice alternatives

From Central Station, cycle to Nieuwmark and on to the Waterlooplein. From there just follow the Amsterdam river, best staying on the eastern shore.
Other worthwhile biking destinations from Amsterdam are:
- Volendam, Edam and Marken (old fishermen villages). To get there, start by taking one of the free ferries behind Central Station
- the Dutch coast (Zandvoort and Bloemendaal).
All of those are excellent day trips.
