Orly to Brantome - two nights to get there, where to stay?

We will be picking up a leased car at Orly in early September and have two nights free along the way to Brantome (Dordogne). Wondering if it would be worth driving straight to Bordeaux and spending a night there (long drive on toll roads) before heading to Brantome, or stopping along the way and staying over two nights somewhere. If we were to stop along the way, we would likely stay off the toll roads. For reference, we have never been to Bordeaux, but have stayed in the Loire Valley in the past. Not ruling out driving to Amboise (or nearby), staying a couple days and then to Brantome. Advice/suggestions for other possibilities - or if either of the above options sound good - thanks.

What about the Poitiers area? You can then take local roads to Brantôme and stop in Limoges and Oradour-sur-Glane. Things to see: the Romanesque church in Poitiers, abbaye de Saint Savin, Angles-sur-l'Anglin:

The national porcelain museum is in Limoges

Poitiers would be a my choice also. Lots of stuff to visit in the area besides the city itself. Pick up a walking itinerary at the tourist office & follow the 3 different walks through 3 different areas.

Michael and StuDudley - Thank you so much for this. I wouldn't have thought of Poitiers on my own, and after looking at guidebook info and the map, as well as the internet, it looks to be perfect for our travel plans. We'll stay two nights, so we will have a full day to explore. I especially like the idea of the walking tours.
