Copenhagen & vicinity and Malmo, Sweden

My wife and I are doing a three-week trip with two weeks already booked in Amsterdam and other cities in the Netherlands. We are thinking about flying from Amsterdam to Copenhagen for 7 nights in Copenhagen and Malmo. Any suggestions on what to do and see in Copenhagen, the surrounding area and Malmo?

Others will no doubt have better ideas, but we were staying in Copenhagen and took a bus to Malmo.

There was a beer garden right by the bus drop-off and we got no farther than there, people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere. Surprised to learn the only way to use the (gorgeously clean) restrooms was with a credit card.

I’d like to go back!

There’s a lot to see & do north of Copenhagen. The scenery is beautiful with views towards Sweden. Pretty villages such as Gilleleje and Hornbæk. You can walk around Helsingør and visit Kronberg Castle.

You can take the 20min ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg which is a delightful seaside town, has a seafront you can walk along. Sofiero Palace is a beautiful place to visit in summer. The Kullaberg peninsula is a beautiful place to visit if you can get to it by rental car.

You can go from Helsingborg to Malmö then across the bridge by rental car or bus, if you want to see the bridge itself.

As I suggested in your other thread consider taking the train rather than flying please. Break it up with a night or two in Hamburg if you like. You could even get the night train from Hamburg through to Malmö if you prefer, then work back to Copenhagen before your flight home.

Hi,
I will be in Copenhagen for a month this summer and have been thinking about taking the train to Hamburg. Considering all of the other places I could take a train to visit, do you think Hamburg is a good choice. Also, I get lost easily so would like to stay near the train station. Do you know what area that is as I search for hotels? Is it an ok area to stay? Traveling as a solo female. Thank you

Stockholm is the most obvious option to combine with Copenhagen, esp in the summer. Denmark itself has so much to see, lots of small islands, Bornholm etc and then you can go to Sweden by train, Copenhagen central station isn't difficult to find and Copenhagen is not a big city, The station is close to Vesterbro area, its not necessary to stay in that area, areas behind stations are not always that nice. Are you planning to stay a whole month in a hotel?

Stockholm gets my vote over Copenhagen.

very interesting.

When I'm in Copenhagen I have an Airbnb in Norrebro. My daughter is doing a postdoc there and I've learned my way around the city. I was there for a month last summer and we went to Stockholm. This summer we're going to Oslo and Aarhaus, but I have time for a couple more short solo trips during the week when she will be working. I was wondering if Hamburg was worth a visit because it's only a 5 hour train, or if I should just see places in Denmark like Mon. It was staying in Hamburg that I was wondering about. Thanks for your help.

I don't know anything about Hamburg but northern Germany around Kiel & Lübeck is beautiful, pass it on the way to Denmark when we drive & often wish we stopped a couple of days but you might have to start your own thread for info about Germany. There is also Bornholm which is a very charming place.

May not be wise to fly from Amsterdam airport... The chaos at the airport last summer were so bad that the CEO had to bow out.

Along a rail trip to Copenhagen, there are some interesting places to stop by.

If you are interested in Danish history, Dybbøl was the defining moment which shaped Denmark as we understand today.

Flensburg have a lot to offer, such as Gluecksburg castle. Flensburg used to be the biggest port of Denmark.

Thanks, I'll look into this. Just saw a poster mention Hamburg and thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks for the info!

People have such long memories. Last year’s problems at Amsterdam has no bearing on what it’s like to travel thru that airport today or next summer.

Hi cyndeelou, Hamburg is a good choice, it is a very interesting city and worth a visit. As a solo female I would probably not do the Reeperbahn (in the red light district St. Pauli), even though it is one of the sights that Hamburg is famous for. The area around the train station is uninspiring and I don't think downright dangerous, but generally I would not stay near train stations in Europe. I don't think of Hamburg as at all unsafe or bad for female travellers, but it is a port city and that brings its 'colourful' elements - sex shops for instance, are very open and obvious. The Hauptbahnhof (main train station, Hbf) is right downtown, near the town hall area and you would do equally well to pick something in the centre of the city, near the town hall. Last time we were in Hamburg - maybe six or seven years ago - we had a car and so stayed a way out so as to be able to get a car park, so I would probably not recommend that hotel for you. But if you are really bent on staying near the station, the InterCity hotels specialise in locations near stations. They are simple, clean and functional business hotels, but I think you could do better if you were prepared to go a little further afield.
