I totally agree, KayF. LAX can be so crowded and chaotic. I dread passing through Customs and Immigration there. Even though I'm a US citizen (who lives in NZ), I'm often treated like I'm trying to sneak into the US on a fake US passport. They once held me up at immigration for more than a half hour while my husband, who had no trouble passing through, waited on the other side, wondering what had happened to me. I've never have trouble passing through immigration in San Francisco. There, it's always, "Welcome home." I don't know what it's like at JFK as I've only arrived in NYC on a domestic flight, but it's hard to imagine it's s bad as LAX.
Renting a car at LAX can also be horrific, especially at peak times or holidays.
