PM Kishida is likely to announce a Japan reopening this week when he visits NYC to attended the UN General Sssembly.

Last week, United cut service to Haneda Airport. Have three bookings that had to move to Narita.

Sheraton Miyako in Tokyo offers "prepaid refundable" rates. This could be a good deal if the yen rate changes significantly, but it depends on room type and length of stay. Maybe other hotels offer this type of rate.

September typhoon.

Just saw the news in the Mainichi Shinbun, fantastic! We had all our family visa applications ready to submit tomorrow so now we don’t have to go down to the embassy.

We were fortunate to book our air and hotels earlier as prices have spiked considerably since then. But we’re relieved that my wife can visit her 88 year old mother and youngest brother now as it’s been 4 years since her last trip.

Hopefully now they will increase flights because airfares are now quite high.

Economy class saver award tickets are generally available using AA or UA miles, just about every day. Delta has the best premium economy price that is not horrible compared to other airlines ($749 one-way from LAX or $100 or so more for a refundable ticket). Should be $500 to $550. Basic economy would be about $400 each way.

So, it is do-able, depending on your budget, but nowhere near the $920 roundtrip nonstops on Singapore Airlines premium economy of Nov 2019. Similar trip today is almost double that.

The good news is that the yen is on sale, about 24% less than pre-pandemic. That could offset the higher airfare costs.

Business class fares are way to high in money or miles, at least in the short term. Zip Air looks interesting, an LCC with a premium seat.

Unfortunately high price in fuel probably partially responsible for the high cost of airfares plus the decrease in number of flights going to Japan. I think the introduction of new medium size planes such as the 789 going directly to places like Singapore at the expense of larger planes like the 747 or 777 for a connection in NRT also a factor.
