A Sleeper train to Scotland?

My wife has long wanted to undertake a sleeper return journey between Didcot to Scotland and today I discovered the Caledonian Sleeper Internet page only to find that it is now closed so I feel luck to have found this forum.

I suggested a date in late March 2021 to my wife who suggested that bearing in mind the vagaries of the political thought process of this Government regarding the length of the existing lockdown it might be better to consider a date in mid-April.

Then questions such as, is Fort William the best place to aim for or should we consider Edinburgh?

Then, where would we stay for the few days we would like to spend in Scotland?

The final question, what discounts such as Rail Cards etc. are available?

Next step was to look for a forum of some sort that discusses such matters and I found this one. So, can anyone offer suggested answers to this post and if not maybe someone could suggest a forum or even a travel agent that specialises in such matters.

Regards, BML

For all things rail/train related check The Man in Seat 61 https://www.seat61.com

He is based in (I think) Bucks but knows and links absolutely everything re train travel in the UK (and just about every other place on earth)

Sleepers leave from Euston so if you start from Didcot, you will have already been on one train and the Tube or a bus or taxi before boarding the sleeper.

Are you based in England? Things might open up a bit by April but nothing is clear at the moment. If coming from overseas this would seem 100% off the table.

"Then, where would we stay for the few days we would like to spend in Scotland? "

How many stars are in the sky? The sleepers essentially go to Edinburgh, Inverness, Ft William and Glasgow. So one of those would seem the most logical - unless you hired a car - then you could spend the time absolutely anywhere.

I posted a semi-detailed response about 30 mins ago but it is in Moderation - hopefully it will show up soon.

I have taken the Caledonian Sleeper, from London to Edinburgh. I have taken a fair number of other night trains. My night on the Caledonian Sleeper was one of the absolute worst. While the rolling stock has been improved since my trip, I doubt that the rails have, and it was the ride that was particularly bad. I usually recommend night trains, but in this case I would recommend doing the trip in the day time, and enjoying the scenery. I got a discount because I had bought a senior rail card. Check the info on seat61.com, or try https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/Train_Tickets.aspx Suggest buying/borrowing a guide book you help you decide where to go in Scotland.

I have relatives in the UK, and I have zero thought of visiting them before the fall, if then. Forget the spring.
