trip from maryland to mackinac island

We have about 2 1/2 weeks to travel. We want to visit Mackinac Island in Michigan, but not sure of a nice scenic route to take or what to see on the way from Maryland. We're kind of open ended here. Not sure if we should go straight there then maybe to Chicago or visit Wisconsin (went to school in Madison) or go there then up into Canada and what to do there. I realize this isn't an easy question to answer, just wondering if anyone has done a trip like this before. We're leaving July 27th, just my husband and myself. Thank you!

My husband and I recently drove from Virginia to Wisconsin. We loved the west cost of WI (Hudson) and spent the day in St. Paul & Stillwater, MN. We intentionally avoided Chicago due to traffic. Our route was 64 to 35 through Ohio and then 74/70 west to Champaign, IL. It was an exhausting trip and there was a lot of road work. I'd do Milwaukee or Madison before Chicago due to logistics, but really its up to you.
