Solo travel in the White Sea region

Is independent solo travel possible in the White Sea region of far Northwest Russia? Train service seems good to Murmansk or Kandalaksha, and other places like Solovetsky Island region. I'm interested in traveling to Arctic regions of Russia during the summer, planning on June 2019. My interest is in photographing the smaller place, villages along the sea, the monastery at Solovetsky Island, and other out of the way place on the North and South coast of the White Sea.
Will this be possible without hiring a driver/guide?
Is car rental possible, it seem so but don't know the details?
Are there independent local guides available for hire?
I don't speak Russian but can learn Cyrillic characters if recommended.
