For those Fodorites headed to Paris and London this week

Be prepared for cold weather... and snow!

It is snowing right now in Paris.

It's very cold throughout most of Europe. There's snow in Rome.
Some of the Amsterdam canals are now closed to boats to allow the ice to freeze for skating - maybe Katie Couric was right after all

Austria ha suspended it's ban on full face coverings because of the cold.
We have had a few flurries of snow here and it is currently -5C, but feels much colder because of the wind. Not cold by North American standards of course, but cold by European standards after the last many mild winters.
Meanwhile Svalbard is too hot, +4C, the 81st month in a row it has been too warm. A tragedy for the wildlife there, and for the world too as the ice cap melts.

It's due to warm up again from the weekend btw.

It's been a bit below 0C all over the Languedoc-Roussillon for days, with a killer wind. Not terribly pleasant for sightseeing

Was in London once when a dusting of snow came down overnight and buses and tubes were shut until it melted by noon. Saw tabloid headlines next day: Snow snarls London! London less likely to get snow I think than Paris.

The snow was beautiful from inside the cafe where I spent the afternoon writing (with a bottle of wine). 😍. So far I’m very happy with my choice.

I'd love to see London and Paris with snow. Fresh snow is so beautiful. Later on it's messy but I love seeing it. We are finally supposed to get a snow storm that counts on Thursday so I'm crossing my fingers. I'd rather be in Paris or London if I had my druthers.

It sounds like you had a lovely day Belinda.

I have been to Paris (twice!) when it snowed, but the snow in Rome is what really intrigues me. I would have loved to see this:

Snow there would be something to see! But could do without wind.
Looks like even higher winds forecast for Thursday:

Weather station at the Zugspitze just recorded the coldest temps (-30 C) in a century:

In town, it's been -6 or -10 during the day and -14 or -16 at night. Chilly!

Swan, you do live in a winter wonderland! I remember that Christmas sleigh ride and how cold it was on the way back!

it’s -7 now in Paris but sunny. Snow coming again overnight.

then a week of rain.

Temperatures in Paris will be normal by Friday and then sweeten up for a bit.

True, B! But because of global cc, our winters have been pretty brief & warm. So this has been a throw-back, of sorts.

Hope you enjoy it...? Do hope the wind isn't bad, which can make a rainfall truly miserable!

Cold and variable in London. Yesterday was a succession of bright sunny periods interspersed with short snow showers, then at lunchtime the clouds came down really low, visibility down to about 100 metres and heavy blown snow till about 2.30 - and then the sun shone again. Overnight there's been about two inches of snow, and temperatures definitely below freezing. Just debating what footwear I need to get to the paper shop and back.

7.45 am today

Thanks for the photo Patrick! I've been hoping for some good London snow pictures!

Stay warm and dry.

I'm in the south of England, and yesterday's snow didn't really settle to any degree, but the pavements were treacherous in the extreme as it had all melted and refrozen as very thin sheet ice immediately. The car park at work was like a skating rink.

A bit of transit chaos in London this morning getting into work due to the snow falling in Kent and trains being cancelled on many lines. We got about 2 inches in Greenwich and the DLR was running a good service by 7am. People trickling into work as I speak...

It is pretty though!

Well, -ish.

This is the view from London Bridge an hour and a half ago (but the sun was shining again within the hour):

I'm only 20 miles from London, but it might as well be Murmansk it's so cold.
