Ten days south of the Pyrenees
Hello Fodorites.
In September this year, I have about ten days after leaving San Sebastian and arriving Barcelona. I’ll be by myself.I will have a car and will drive south of the Pyrenees. I plan to take some of that time around Girona, but wonder how to allocate my time.
Some places I’d like to see:
Pamplona
Roncevalles (non-negotiable as I am a big fan of the Song of Roland even though I know that it’s BS)
La Rioja
Zaragozza
Huesca
Girona
I am a huge fan of archaeology and medieval religious architecture, and although I do enjoy nature, that’s not usually the focus of my travels. I am not much of a foody but do enjoy eating and drinking a nice glass or three of red wine with dinner.
I do have one big question: When I first started planning this several years ago, I made reservations everywhere. But this time I’d like to wing it a little bit. I have reservations in San Sebastian and in Barcelona, but otherwise, nothing reserved as yet. Should I make reservations or will I be able to “wing it”? I don’t need fancy hotels as my wife will not be with me on this trip: just a quiet room, a comfortable bed, and a good breakfast. Am I going to have problems with finding accommodations?
Thanks for any help you can provicde.

which has a parador if staying overnight.

The later in September the less need to reserve. The reason is that schools are open and less families go on vacation then. But you can do that on the 12hours before you arrive at preferred destination by using a phone app of a hotel reservation website. That is what I d,o after having missed out an ideal location, once during a trip in fall.
BTW this has been taged as a question for Lithuania. That is a mistake I feel.

Thanks! Michael, your suggestions have me covered until I get to the Girona/Costa Brava area.
Vanaarle—corrected. Thanks. It was a while since I visited this forum and am not used to the new tag systems.
I’ll be in this area the third full week of September.I am somewhat cautious as this is the third time I’’ve tried making this trip—the first two were cancelled by COVID—and this time around my first-choice hotels in Madrid and Barcelona were not available when I tried to book them.
