Recommendations for Venice in May

My husband and I have booked a Croatian cruise leaving Venice in May. We were in Venice 12 years ago and loved it. I'm wondering how many days we should stay in Venice prior to the cruise. My husband is now 79 and not able to walk long distances, but we are eager to continue to explore this beautiful city. Any suggestions for dining, classes, music, etc. are greatly appreciated.

Can you spend a week in Venice first?! The water bus Vaporetto ("Vap") can take you closer to places of interest and save walking time for your husband.

When you were in Venice before, did you visit Murano and Burano? The first Vap stop was to a glass-blowing shop on Murano; stay on the Vap for the later glass museum stop. Take a camera to colorful Burano.

Google Scuole if you are interested in art. La Scuola Grande dei Carmini was my favorite but, Scuola Grande di San Rocco with the Tintorettos is more famous. Check with your hotel clerk or concierge for the closest Vap stops. If modern art is more your thing, Peggy Guggenheim's museum is a must.

My hub and I attended a Vivaldi concert...saw a flyer for it and hotel folks helped us find the spot. Fenice is the opera house but you need to see what's there in May.

Another schedule to check is the casino. Do check as it was ages ago that we went.

Others can suggest more places. 3 or 4 days would be my suggestion. Please share your experiences!

Thank you. I totally forgot about the Casino. I think we will have 4 days. Appreciate any recommendations.

There is a recent thread on restaurants here - Food, glorious food, in Venice

If you like art, the Biennale will be going on. https://www.labiennale.org/en/art/2022
Besides the pavilions there are exhibits in other places, like palazzos, so you can get into some buildings you normally would not get into.

I have not been to the casino in a while but I think I would rather see some art than go back (and I love gambling.)

  • Burano -- Just my personal preference, but Burano is more interesting than Murano for casual walking around at a slow pace.
  • The island San Giorgio is another good spot. A 3-minute vaporetto ride from the San Marco-SanZaccaria stop to the island and its beautiful church...and an elevator to the top of the campanile from which the view of the main island is breathtaking.
  • The Museo Storico Navale De Venezia (Naval History Museum) -- at the Arsenale vap stop -- is very interesting. Though, when we were there in 2016, there was remodeling going on and only some of the ships were on display...I expect it's fully open now, but I'm not sure.

I have been to the Biennale Arte twice, most recently in 2019, and cannot recommend it highly enough--if you like/are interested in/openminded about contemporary art.

I hope I can return this year.
